Finally. It’s been a heck of a about a four-week time period (not quite a month). I haven’t had health issues like this in… well, ever, it seems. But I finally got a decent light kettlebell workout in yesterday.
First I twisted my knee whilst vigorously fencing (and kicking butt, I’ll have you know! 🙂 ). Then, somehow, I’ve been plagued by severe blisters on my right foot that had been growing and taking for-ever to heal. That was week two. And I’m still wearing a bandaid on my little toe and along the knife-edge of that foot. But it’s mostly okay. Not weeping or anything. And last week about this time I finally succumbed to my roommates continual attempts to get me sick. Probably didn’t help that I was fighting infection of the raw skin areas on my foot.
But this last week has been pretty bad for my head/nose/throat/chest cold. I did throw the little bell around a few days ago, which did seem to help jump start my recovery. Now I still have a little bit of a sinus issue, my throat seems just a little swollen, and one ear (probably eustachian tube) is plugged up to where I can’t hear very well on that side. Really quite annoying.
But nose is hardly running, and I don’t have a sinus headache, and I’ve been able to sleep a lot better in the last couple of days. I’ve started taking some sudafed, which may have helped on that front.
To top it all off, this has been the busiest last four weeks at work that I can remember. Naturally. With a twisted knee, then a horrible set of blisters, I ended up having to run back and forth between sets of engineers and developers all over my building, instead of sitting in a chair with my foot up and my shoe off. And this week I ended up giving endless briefs and being at meeting after meeting setting up stuff for my projects. Hacking and coughing through most of it…
Nonetheless, as I said before, I got to throw my little bell around the other day, when I felt I could stand and not rip my skin, and not hack out a lung. Then yesterday I got annoyed at my plugged up ear and went down and did a decent collection of LCCJs and snatches, hoping to amp up the adrenalin and blow out my lungs and open up my ear. It used to work for me as a kid. I had a lot of ear problems as a kid, but I head out on my bike and really pump it; with the heavy breathing and work rush I could feel my ears open up like when they pop going up mountains or diving under water.
I’ve found that a good workout (not necessarily a killer one, though) can be a great stimulator for kicking your body back into healing gear, whether it’s from sickness or from injury. I’ve come back from several injuries that way. I seem to have a pretty good intuitive grasp on when, what, and how hard to go at it.
Last night I did a simple set of 2 minutes LCCJ for each hand at 24 kgs, followed by 2 minutes snatch each hand with the 16 kg. Simple and easy. With the snatches I really tried to get the breathing going and feel the adrenalin.
Alas, I didn’t get my ear to pop, but I did breathe heavy enough to really feel the fluid burbling in my lungs. I was able to cough some of it out, but not all. Oh, well. I felt 10 times better today, for most of the day, anyway. With way less sinus drainage and perkier, ta boot.
So, take that! Hah! I was thinking about hitting them again, today, but I’m wavering on that. We’ll see. But I really miss my fencing (and my fencers), both sport and Medieval. The Mary Wash crew had a scrimmage with the other local club, Dark Horse, which I missed 😦 . I just couldn’t think about running around any more of the day with shoes on, and hacking all over the place. And, well–I didn’t leave from work ’til around 1900 anyway.
But hopefully I’ll be back soon!
